José Ramírez Finds the October Spotlight, Mostly for the Better
It’s been a rough season for José Ramírez. After a sluggish start, the 34-year-old third baseman suffered a fractured left hamate that required surgery and knocked him out of action for nearly six weeks, then struggled so mightily upon returning that it took him nearly two months to barrel a ball. His bat showed some life in the second half of September as he helped the Guardians overtake the… Source

Phillies Re-Sign Tim Mayza, Hire Carlos Mendoza As Third Base Coach
The Phillies made a couple of notable moves on Thursday morning, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced. In addition to re-signing left-handed reliever Tim Mayza to a one-year deal, the Phillies hired former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as their third base and infield coach (via Matt Gelb of The Athletic). More to come
Boston Prospect Brooks Brannon, No Longer a Backstop, Talks Hitting
The 22-year-old slugger changed positions, bought into pull-side power, and emerged as a prospect to watch in the Red Sox system. Source
Phillies Reached Out To Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez In Managerial Search
The Phillies put an end to their managerial search when they promoted interim skipper Don Mattingly to the full-time role on Wednesday. They showed interest in ex-Red Sox manager Alex Cora during the process, but he wasn’t the only outside candidate on their radar. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski formally requested permission to contact Dodgers employees Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez about the job, Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports. The two former Phillies “politely declined,” according to Stark.
The Opener: Brewers Up 3-0, Bauers/Mitchell, Williams
The Brewers took a 3-0 lead on the Dodgers. Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell went back-to-back off Blake Snell.
This Is Why Kevin Cash Pulled Blake Snell
LOS ANGELES — On Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium, Blake Snell took the mound with his team down 2-0 in the NLCS and made one of the best postseason starts I’ve ever seen. For six scoreless innings, he was nearly unhittable. At one point, he set down 14 Brewers in a row, striking out nine of them. Only two baserunners separated Snell’s stretch from the historic postseason performances of Roy… Source
Effectively Wild Episode 2544: Just Wait Till Next Year
Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about ALCS Game 3, nominate (13:52) the five Rays-iest players on the current Rays roster, discuss the Dodgers’ decision to start Shohei Ohtani in NLCS Game 3 (and the matchup between the Brewers and Blake Snell), react (57:00) to news about the Phillies’, Astros’, and (maybe?) Mariners’ managers, and […] Source
Not Like Last Year: Brewers Beat Snell in Game 3, Extend NLCS Lead to 3-0
If you’re searching for a metaphor for how differently the 2026 NLCS has gone than last year’s version, look no further than Blake Snell. In 2025, the two-time Cy Young winner humbled Milwaukee in the series opener, allowing one hit over eight strong innings, a prelude to the drubbing the Dodgers put on the Brewers in a sweep. This year, Snell got the start in Game 3, attempting to keep his team… Source
Braves Outright Luke Williams
The Braves sent utility player Luke Williams through outright waivers, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Atlanta designated him for assignment last week when they added Danny Young to the roster to keep him out of minor league free agency this offseason.
White Sox To Pursue Starting Pitching
White Sox general manager Chris Getz spoke with members of the media today, including James Fegan of the Chicago Sun Times, after the club was recently eliminated by the Guardians. Looking ahead to 2027, Getz said the Sox will pursue starting pitching this offseason. It’s not a surprising declaration. Though the Sox had a good
Offseason Outlook: Detroit Tigers
The Tigers never recovered from an atrocious May. They wound up dealing the two-time defending Cy Young winner at the deadline but didn’t orchestrate any kind of rebuild. They’ll look to reload this offseason and improve upon a 76-86 finish, yet it’s going to take a lot of work on the pitching staff and some

So Just How Pissed off Is Pat Murphy?
When you manage a big league ballclub, life is unfair. You’re always one bad season, maybe just one really bad month, from getting fired. Even when you’re doing a good job, a vocal contingent of your fellow citizens is likely still agitating for your ouster, mostly because they just kind of like the way they sound when they’re agitating for someone to lose their livelihood. Writers you’ve known… Source
Twins Hire Brian Reith As Pitching Coach
The Twins announced Tuesday that they’ve named Brian Reith their new pitching coach, replacing Pete Maki, whose contract wasn’t renewed at season’s end. Reith has spent the past five seasons as the pitching coach with the Rays’ Triple-A affiliate in Durham, and he pitched in parts of three major league seasons with the Reds from 2001-04. Minnesota also elevated Ben Myers, who’s been on the training staff with their top affiliate in St. Paul, to the major league staff as an assistant athletic trainer. More to come.
