    Persona: Ingmar Bergman’s stone-cold classic

Essential reading, viewing, and listening from the EI editors. I first saw Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, his stone-cold classic of 1965, as a teenager, and God knows how many times I have seen it since. It has the greatest opening sequence in cinema: a percussive, rapid-fire montage that can never be wholly accommodated or understood. The film’s story is, however, a simple one (even if its Jungian resonances are deep and complex).

China's Cyber Strategy and Western Deterrence Gaps

What might NATO governments need to do better to respond to China’s approach to cyber espionage? In their most recent research, Dr Louise Marie Hurel and Dr Gareth Mott have argued that in order to respond to Russian and Chinese hybrid threats, NATO member states and allies can no longer view cyber as a siloed activity, confined to cyber-specific departments. What is needed is a whole-of-government approach that can impose costs on adversaries not through the creation of new institutions or tools but by better using existing ones in a more integrated fashion. In this video commentary, Dr Louise Marie Hurel and Dr Ahana Datta Fasel discuss how China has used cyber as a testing ground for escalation, Western misperceptions which regarded these operations as isolated incidents rather than coordinated statecraft, and the critical need to develop effective deterrence strategies. 'Full Stack Spies: Cyber Espionage in the Age of US-China Competition' by Dr Ahana Datta Fasel examines the dynamic, interdependent relationships that hackers, cyber defenders, tech giants and nation-states forge, leverage and exploit to amass cyber power against a wide range of targets in geopolitics, global trade and finance, the armed forces, and critical infrastructure. Dr Ahana Datta Fasel advises governments and companies globally on geopolitical, technological, and systemic risk. Previously, she was the Financial Times’ cyber chief, and held senior cyber roles in the UK government, serving in the Ministry of Justice, Cabinet Office, and the National Cyber Security Centre. She is a strategic advisor on national security and defence to UK Research and Innovation, and a trustee of Privacy International. #cyberstrategy #cybersecurity #resilience #research #cyber
