How China's Economic Miracle Shattered
In this episode of Pekingology, Senior Fellow Henrietta Levin is joined by Logan Wright, author of the new book Broken China: How the Economic Miracle Shattered and What it Means for the World (https://www.politybooks.com/bookdetail?book_slug=broken-china-how-the-economic-miracle-shattered-and-what-it-means-for-the-world--9781509570676) . Logan argues the Chinese economy is already shrinking, in large part due to its overextended financial system. Logan and Henrietta discuss what happens when the tools on which Beijing relies to control the economy stop working, why China's stalling economy is causing problems for its trading partners, and how Chinese financial policy may be fueling organized crime around the world.

Ukraine Has Problems With Both Koreas? | The Capital Cable #144
North Korea has sent soldiers and munitions to fight for Russia in its war against Ukraine. South Korea, a major aid recipient country for Ukraine, has kept its support largely at the humanitarian level. The two governments have also clashed over captured North Korean soldiers, after Kyiv publicly disclosed that it had transferred two prisoners of war to Seoul, which Seoul says violated an agreement to keep the transfer confidential. Where do Kyiv and Seoul’s interests converge and diverge on North Korea’s role in the war? What is Pyongyang gaining from its partnership with Moscow, and what does it mean for the Korean Peninsula? Joining Mark Lippert and Victor Cha to discuss these issues and more are Emma Chanlett-Avery of the Asia Society Policy Institute and Sydney Seiler of CSIS. Emma Chanlett-Avery is Deputy Director of the Asia Society Policy Institute's Washington, DC office and the Director for Political-Security Affairs. She leads Congressional outreach efforts and directs ASPI’s policy engagement on Indo-Pacific alliances. Previous to this post, she served for 20 years as a Specialist in Asian Affairs at the Congressional Research Service, where she focused on United States relations with Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Thailand, and Singapore, with an emphasis on security issues. In 2023, she served as a Congressional Fellow on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, assisting the Chairman with drafting Asia policy legislation and preparing for hearings. Sydney Seiler was the national intelligence officer for North Korea at the National Intelligence Council from 2020 to 2023 and is one of the nation’s top experts on North Korea. Previously, he was the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) senior analyst and senior defense intelligence expert for North Korea from 2016 to 2020, serving as the principal adviser and senior expert on Korean Peninsula security issues to the USFK commander and the U.S. Defense Intelligence Enterprise. Mr. Seiler also served as the U.S. speci

Ukraine Is Suddenly Sending A Robot Army Against Russia | VisualPolitik EN
🔐 Learn about finance with us in a simple, free, and straight-to-the-point way: https://www.visualfaktory.com/free-gift/ Ukraine is already using ground drones, known as UGVs, on the front line. During Operation Vivaldi on the Lyman front, heavy bombers dropped kamikaze ground robots more than 10 kilometers behind Russian lines, and old Soviet armored personnel carriers packed with explosives helped Ukraine break through the Russian defenses at Nove and Katerynivka. But combat is only a small part of the story. Robots like the MAUL evacuate wounded soldiers, others clear and lay mines, and according to Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, ground robots carried out 25,143 logistics and evacuation missions in August, more than three times as many as in January. In places like Kostiantynivka, they have become the main way to keep the troops supplied. In this video we look at what these robots are really doing on the front, whether Ukraine is using them at scale or they are mostly propaganda, and whether they could break the stalemate and ease Ukraine's shortage of soldiers. Are We Misreading China’s Cyber Attacks?
RUSI's Louise Marie Hurel speaks with Dr Ahana Datta Fasel, author of Full Stack Spies: Cyber Espionage in the Age of US-China Competition, about the evolution of China’s cyber operations and their role in wider statecraft. You can watch the full interview on our website. #ChinaCyber #CyberEspionage #CyberSecurity #ChineseHacking #USChinaCompetition #NationalSecurity #CyberDeterrence

China's Cyber Strategy and Western Deterrence Gaps
What might NATO governments need to do better to respond to China’s approach to cyber espionage? In their most recent research, Dr Louise Marie Hurel and Dr Gareth Mott have argued that in order to respond to Russian and Chinese hybrid threats, NATO member states and allies can no longer view cyber as a siloed activity, confined to cyber-specific departments. What is needed is a whole-of-government approach that can impose costs on adversaries not through the creation of new institutions or tools but by better using existing ones in a more integrated fashion. In this video commentary, Dr Louise Marie Hurel and Dr Ahana Datta Fasel discuss how China has used cyber as a testing ground for escalation, Western misperceptions which regarded these operations as isolated incidents rather than coordinated statecraft, and the critical need to develop effective deterrence strategies. 'Full Stack Spies: Cyber Espionage in the Age of US-China Competition' by Dr Ahana Datta Fasel examines the dynamic, interdependent relationships that hackers, cyber defenders, tech giants and nation-states forge, leverage and exploit to amass cyber power against a wide range of targets in geopolitics, global trade and finance, the armed forces, and critical infrastructure. Dr Ahana Datta Fasel advises governments and companies globally on geopolitical, technological, and systemic risk. Previously, she was the Financial Times’ cyber chief, and held senior cyber roles in the UK government, serving in the Ministry of Justice, Cabinet Office, and the National Cyber Security Centre. She is a strategic advisor on national security and defence to UK Research and Innovation, and a trustee of Privacy International. #cyberstrategy #cybersecurity #resilience #research #cyber

How can governments control AI? | Canada's AI Minister
The ‘too big to fail' financial crisis of 2008 is giving way to the AI challenge of ‘too big to curtail', Canadian minister Evan Solomon told Chatham House. Solomon, Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, was talking at an event about the challenges facing governments who want to retain oversight of increasingly powerful AI companies. He is Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation. Speaking at Chatham House on 13 October 2026, Solomon argued that democratic governments must retain sovereign control over artificial intelligence governance, rather than leaving oversight solely to technology companies. From an event titled 'Sovereignty is not solitude: Canada's strategy for democratic technology leadership'.
