Pakistan And Afghanistan At WAR: Is This The End Of The Taliban? | VisualPolitik EN
🔐 Learn about finance with us in a simple, free, and straight-to-the-point way: https://www.visualfaktory.com/free-gift/ For twenty years, Pakistan gave the Taliban leadership a safe haven. Now its own intelligence community believes that was a mistake, and that Pakistan will not be safe until the Taliban regime is gone. On 24 September, Pakistani warplanes and drones struck ten targets in Afghanistan, one of them in Kandahar, the city where the Taliban's supreme leader lives. Meanwhile, Islamabad is hosting the Afghan opposition, and anti-Taliban groups claimed 88 attacks in 21 provinces between May and July, according to the UN. But an all-out war is another matter. An invasion could turn Pashtuns on both sides of the border against Islamabad. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the gateway to Kabul, is governed by Imran Khan's party, which opposes the war. The oil crisis has pushed inflation to 11.7%, 43 of every 100 rupees the state spends go to debt, and Balochistan and India remain open fronts. In this video we answer three questions: why everything suggests Pakistan has already begun to act against the Taliban, how far Islamabad is backing the rebels, and why it is still holding back from an all-out war. Does Health Research Reach Washington?
On Friday, October 9 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am ET, The CSIS Bipartisan Alliance for Global Health Security in partnership with the WashU Bursky School of Public Health will host an event in Washington, DC focused on the role of universities in strengthening the connection between research evidence and policy action. During a period of increased skepticism toward the value of universities and the public health enterprise, how can researchers, policymakers, and communities collaborate to increase trust in university research and the value placed on public health evidence? This event is part of the “Better Ways of Knowing” project, a multiyear initiative led by the Healthier Futures Lab at WashU Bursky School of Public Health in collaboration with the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research. The project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aims to rethink how public health knowledge is generated, communicated, and translated into action. This convening is being deliberately held in Washington to bring together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss how public health evidence can better align with the realities of policy decision-making. Sandro Galea, Margaret C. Ryan Dean of Public Health, Eugene S. and Constance Kahn Distinguished Professor in Public Health, Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives, Washington University in St. Louis Bursky School of Public Health, will provide opening remarks. J. Stephen Morrison, Senior Vice President and Director, CSIS Global Health Policy Center, will moderate the discussion. He will be joined by Jennifer E. Layden, Associate Dean for Practice and Professor, Washington University in St. Louis Bursky School of Public Health, Julie Morita, President & CEO; Board Member, The Joyce Foundation, and William Steiger, Senior Adviser (Non-resident), Global Health Policy Center; and Chief Executive Officer, Malaria No More. Will OpenAI run out of money by 2027?
“The problem is not [OpenAI’s] products. The problem is the cash burn,” says Sebastian Mallaby in a conversation with Rebecca Patterson on The Spillover, where he revisits his concerns about a funding crisis at OpenAI. Mallaby states that OpenAI’s most recent projected loss between now and 2030 is almost $280 billion. “They are talking about a new fundraise. They’re targeting $30 billion. You’d have to do a lot of $30 billion fundraisers in order to get to covering that $280 billion gap,” he says. How Demand for GLP-1s Overwhelmed the Global Drug System
Why It Matters is back with a brand new season. This time, we’re taking a look at the fragility of the global health system and the vulnerable position the United States finds itself in today. The first episode unpacks what happened when some of the world’s most wanted drugs—GLP-1s—met a system that was unable to handle the demand. U.S.-Africa Economic Ties Beyond AGOA | Into Africa
With the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) renewed through 2028, the United States has an opportunity to rethink its economic relationship with Africa. While U.S.-Africa trade has not kept pace with the growth of China-Africa trade, African countries are increasingly shaping their own economic future through initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). What would it take for the United States to remain a competitive economic partner, and what should a modern U.S.-Africa trade relationship look like? In this episode of Into Africa, Oge Onubogu is joined by Enoh Ebong, President of CSIS's Global Development Department, and Navin Girishankar, President of CSIS's Economic Security and Technology Department, to discuss AGOA's legacy, the changing global trade landscape, and what a future U.S.-Africa economic framework must deliver. The Into Africa podcast is made possible by the generous support of the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. --------------------------------------------- A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. Without Parallel: North Korean Human Rights and the Russia Axis
Join us for an event featuring a panel discussion refocusing attention on North Korean human rights by examining conditions at the Alabuga drone-production facilities in Russia. It will also mark the launch of a new joint CSIS–Bush Institute report analyzing the North Korean regime’s state-sponsored trafficking and how these drones are enabling and intensifying the unprovoked war in Ukraine. The report illustrates how China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea—collectively referred to as CRINK—are increasingly supporting one another and how CRINK cooperation challenges America’s leadership and the rules-based international order. This event is co-hosted by CSIS and the George W. Bush Institute. --------------------------------------------- A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. How the War Is Changing the UAE and India | The High Top
How is the war in Iran shifting the way the UAE and India view trade restrictions? Jon Alterman argues that the Emiratis, who believed working with Iran would keep them from becoming a target, have instead been Iran’s number one target, while for India the war has reinforced its instinct to balance competing interests rather than fully side with any one power. --------------------------------------------- A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. Reckoning or rhetoric: Is now the time for reparative justice on the global stage?
A landmark UN resolution recognising the transatlantic slave trade as the “gravest crime against humanity” has reset the terms of the global reparations debate. Resolution A/80/L.48, backed by a unified front of African, Caribbean and global Black diaspora leaders, passed by a comfortable majority – though a significant bloc of abstentions, concentrated in the Western world, signalled how far the international community remains from agreement on substance or obligation. A subsequent high-level “Next Steps” conference has pushed discussions of reparative justice from principle toward implementation, even as that divide persists. To commemorate Black History Month, Chatham House’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group brings together speakers to examine where reparatory justice frameworks can move from acknowledgement to policy, and where the limits of political will and international consensus lie. This event discusses: What would it mean to move beyond symbolic recognition toward material and structural forms of reparative justice? What incentives might encourage Western actors to support reparative justice efforts? How does deepening solidarity between Africa and the Caribbean change the leverage behind efforts to refine visions of justice, development and collective political power on the global stage? What can domestic reparatory schemes – local, municipal or national – teach international efforts about design, delivery and durability?

Iran Is Losing Control of the Strait of Hormuz | VisualPolitik EN
👉Go to https://www.protonvpn.com/visualpolitik and get up to 65% off on the 2 year plan. Oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz again. Crude exports from the Persian Gulf are almost back to pre-war levels thanks to a shuttle of tankers that hug the coast of Oman under the protection of the U.S. Navy and Air Force. More than a hundred tankers are already making the round trip. And yet oil is still expensive. Each convoy trip costs around $58 million, China is buying again, and refined products are scarce: the Gulf is exporting half its usual volume, Russia has gone from seller to buyer and China has restricted its fuel exports. Meanwhile, the reserves that kept prices in check are running low. U.S. strategic reserves are at their lowest level since 1982. And Iran, unable to sell a single barrel and with its economy in free fall, is cornered. With the U.S. midterms, Israel's election on 27 October and a third American aircraft carrier on its way, Tehran may see a window to strike. In this video we answer three questions: will Iran escalate, where could it strike, and what would happen to oil prices? 🔐 Learn about finance with us in a simple, free, and straight-to-the-point way: https://www.visualfaktory.com/free-gift/ Join the VisualPolitik community and support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/VisualPolitik

Permitting Reform Returns: What It Is, Isn't, and What's at Stake After the Midterms | Energy Shots
Energy Shots tells energy stories through data, personalities, and politics. This Friday, Joseph Majkut and Kevin Book discuss the return of permitting reform in Washington. The bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, released September 30 by the Senate Environment and Public Works and Energy and Natural Resources committees, is a sweeping, maximalist proposal with a Senate vote expected in the lame-duck session after the midterms. With new data, they examine how the bill's four key negotiators are framing it, from restoring America's ability to build to flooding the grid with clean, affordable energy. This event is made possible by general funding to CSIS and the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program. --------------------------------------------- A nonpartisan institution, CSIS is the top national security think tank in the world. Europe, Brazil and beyond: Is the populist wave gathering momentum? 🎙️ Independent Thinking Pod
The rightward movement in democracies in Europe and beyond shows little sign of slowing. Germany has elected its first far-right regional government in Saxony-Anhalt. In France, voter anger with Emmanuel Macron puts the Rassemblement National’s Marine Le Pen in pole position for the presidency. In Spain, Pedro Sánchez called a snap election in an attempt to mobilise the beleaguered left around Spain’s housing crisis. And Flávio Bolsonaro’s success in the first round of Brazil’s presidential elections suggests a second round of anti-woke, pro-Trump bolsonarismo is on the cards. What is driving politics to the populist right? And what does it mean for global security, stability and efforts to preserve what’s left of the rules-based order? Bronwen Maddox is joined by Grégoire Roos, director of our Europe and Russia and Eurasia Programmes; Nic Lawley, special adviser to the director of Chatham House; and Dr Christopher Sabatini, director of our Latin America Programme. Roberto Velasco on Mexico as a Middle Power
“From the Mexican perspective we don't view ourselves as a middle power,” says Roberto Velasco, secretary of foreign affairs of Mexico. “We don't view the world in terms of powers, but what we agree on is that it's a moment where it's important to make sure that we have relations with all the countries in the world, that we engage with all the different regions in the world, and that we diversify our trade and our relations as much as possible.” Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/WCYsH7 This work represents the views and opinions solely of the author.
