These failures are egregious, shocking, and have been tremendously costly for Israel
“These failures are egregious, shocking, and have been tremendously costly for Israel.” Haviv Rettig Gur argues that Netanyahu’s government has done enormous damage to Israel’s international standing, not just through its policies, but through its disastrous public diplomacy and the inflammatory rhetoric of its own ministers. Allie Beth Stuckey and Deja Foxx: Do We Need Feminism?
For more than a century, feminism fought to expand women’s choices, and in that time a lot of progress was made. The right to vote. The right to work. Equal access to education. Protection from discrimination because you’re pregnant. Those battles changed America. But, somewhere along the way, a movement built around expanding women’s freedom became a source of profound disagreement over what women should actually do with that freedom. And increasingly, women find themselves judged from both directions for making the “wrong” choices. There’s the trope of the work-obsessed, childless “cat lady,” the association of feminism with woke politics and cancel culture, and the notion that feminists want to advance women over men. The stereotype on the other side is just as blunt: that anti-feminists want to send women back to the 1940s, take away their agency, and “keep women in the kitchen.” All of this begs the question: Do we need feminism more than ever? Or . . . not at all? And if we do need it, what is its purpose in 2026? To discuss these critically important topics, we invited two women from different sides of the debate to Nashville. Author and podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey took on political organizer Deja Foxx for our latest Things That Matter debate, hosted by Kelly O’Grady.

How the New Middle East Was Made | Bari Weiss and Simon Sebag Montefiore
Last week I had the privilege of sitting down with one of the foremost historians of our time, Simon Sebag Montefiore. As I write this, his work has never felt more urgent. “We’re in a new world of counterhistory,” he said recently. “A new world of counterhistory where neither historical facts nor present-time facts matter if they don’t fit the ideological orthodoxy.” It is “our responsibility as historians,” he said, “to stand up and be unafraid to contradict conventional wisdom, surging conspiracies, witch hunts, purity tests, pile-ons that are used to crush debate . . . and to say persuasively, ‘This is what happened.’ ” And that is what he does in his brilliant new book, The Cauldron: The Making of the Modern Middle East. But don’t worry. This is Sebag. I promise you this is not some serious, dry textbook. There is a chapter in his book called “Fat Fucker” (which was the CIA’s code name for King Farouk of Egypt). You will learn in his pages that a Palestine Liberation Organization terrorist was married to a Miss Universe. That Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and President John F. Kennedy were both johns at Madame Claude’s Parisian brothel. And that Saddam Hussein was raised by an uncle who wrote a pamphlet titled “Three Whom God Should Not Have Created: Persians, Jews, and Flies.” Okay, maybe that last one was predictable. Sebag has said that this book is the hardest he has ever written, and is a subject that only someone “bonkers” would tackle. Bonkers or brilliant or both: You’ll decide. Sebag is, of course, the author of over a dozen other books such as Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar, The Romanovs, and Catherine the Great & Potemkin, which are essential to understanding power, politics, revolution, dictatorships, and above all, human nature. I asked him how he makes sense of the fight within Islam itself, why we’re so fixated on this region, whether the Middle East’s plight is the product of Western intervention or the choices of its own leaders, how the

The 60-Second Politics of Joe Sweeny
If you live in New York City and spend any time on social media, there’s a chance @Sweeenie’s videos have come across your feed. The John F. Kennedy Jr.–meets–Christian Bale look-alike delivers no-nonsense, 60-second takes from the streets of New York, expounding on the benefits of capitalism, the follies of the Democratic Socialists of America, or the latest Zohran Mamdani press conference. Joe Sweeny is an attorney who grew up in New Jersey, posted his first video in July of last year. He’s already gained a cult following, with over 200,000 followers across platforms and millions of views each month. When I asked what inspired him to start speaking out, he pointed to frustration and fury over the rise of socialism in the city he loves. Despite what his critics might think, he’s never voted Republican. He considers himself a progressive and a liberal in the traditional sense of those words—he’s committed to freedom and liberty. He told me that he believes the modern left has abandoned those values in favor of government overreach, socialism, and anti-American and anti-West points of view. I was excited to sit down with the man behind the 60-second takes. We talked about why his videos are resonating with New Yorkers, why he thinks Mamdani’s message is so effective—and so dangerous—and how algorithms are reshaping our politics. We also got into Donald Trump, the books that have shaped Sweeny’s worldview, and whether he might one day run for Mayor of New York City.
