Review - Preaching to the Choir by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Preaching to the Choir by Adrian Tchaikovsky Bingo Square: Published in 2026 Yet another Terrible World. How was it? I wouldn't say as good as Ogres, but better than Firewalkers. That may not be saying much. Elena Mendes is the girlfriend of Ross Enderbough, scion of that wealthy clan. He has brought her to a once every 40 years family gathering at the old estate, a former monastery.

Recommendations after reading hardly digestible prose

So the last book I read was House of Leaves. Anyone who has read this knows this is a post-modern/experimental fiction work that is meant to be confusing, with text embedded in text embedded in other text, etc. I have now moved back to fantasy, and am over halfway through Gardens of the Moon by Erickson. This seems to be another difficult narrative to wrap my head around as it seems to assume a lot of background, and puts you right in the action with very little context or exposition.

Talking about a book by William Peter Blatty "The Exorcist"

Anybody who is interested in reading horror books must have heard about this classic . A book which I believe even with its simple premise demonstrates the conflict between a man and his being. And it's because of this that I loved it so much, often times we find ourselves searching for the meaning of our lives and even though that meaning may seem nothing more than a dull routine to the world, but to the one who finds his purpose it's those little things that bring him the greatest joys.

Books about mercenary companies that end up conquering land?

I am very interested to read about mercenary companies (preferably low-fantasy) that end up becoming rulers of a conquered territory. Something like the IRL Catalan Company and the Duchy of Athens. If you have a suggestion that doesn't include the conquering, but still does the mercenary part well, I would also like the suggestion! submitted by /u/Barry_the_Merry [link] [comments]

    He Who Fights With Monsters

No spoilers for the series. I just finished book 7. Very unique magic system but terrible writing. The power scaling makes less than no sense. It makes negative sense. Jason Asano can’t both be someone who’s experienced combat like no one else (fighting for days without end numerous times as described as each time worse than historical monster surges) and also be a scrub compared other silver and gold rankers. Either what hes done everyone else has done or he’s unique. You can’t have it both ways.

    Icelandic-inspired Fantasy Recommendations

Hello, all! I'm just getting out of the Cosmere again and looking for new fantasy series with a heavy inspiration taken from Iceland as a setting and/or its folklore. A true fantasy story (sci-fi okay, but not preferred) would be ideal over historical fiction, and points are scored for interesting magic systems and/or worldbuilding elements. If you have and favorites that fit the bill, I'd love to hear them! submitted by /u/MisterPoohead [link] [comments]

    Books revolving around American folklore?

I love mythology/folklore-oriented fantasy however American folklore fantasy seems so rare to come by! I love Old Nathan by David Drake which explores fascinating Applachian lore (magic comes from the mountains and ballads), Dark Tower by King with all of the Wild West legends and American pop culture references, and Charles De Lint’s urban fantasy that hinges a ton on Native American lore and Canadian culture and vibrant descriptions of North American landscapes.

Robin Hobb hurt my feelings again

Significant spoilers for all realm of the elderlings books throughout. Read at your own peril. I have realized one of the things that makes Realm of the Elderlings both an amazing series, and incredibly difficult to read. I’m nearing the end of Fool’s Assassin, and whilst the majority of this book has felt like repeated kick to the loins, it’s also allowed me to finally put a finger on something Robin Hobb does that makes her tragedies so tragic. When Withywoods is raided, it was a total gut punch.
