Books like Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler
i really loved this book and want something that's similar particularly the part about a young woman coming of age and dealing with loneliness and trying to find love or friendship or freedom or something from her life, perhaps with family that doesn’t quite understand her raging desire for freedom or a life unlike theirs submitted by /u/Few_Enthusiasm1050 [link] [comments]
Watch the First Trailer for NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW
The trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has arrived. Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Netflix film premieres in theaters on February 12, and the trailer reveals more than we’ve seen yet of her spin on the first story in the Narnia chronology. Watch it here: Here are my first impressions: “Stairway to Heaven”? Tell me it’s rock opera inspired without telling me I would like the stats on how many people microdose before showing up to the premiere The multiverse
[WWTBC] Historical romance involving luddites?
There was a book series about generations of a family in an industrial town in England in the 19th century. I think one of the MMCs is called Blaize? The FMC ends up having to marry the brother of the guy she's in love with to save her virtue. The following book follows her daughter I think. There's a lot of class politics about the changes being made as labour moves to machines and social issues like slavery. I think it was probably written in the 70s/80s. submitted by /u/misswrite347 [link] [comments]
New to reading looking for recommendations
Hi, I honestly haven’t really read for fun and I’m looking to try it out and just want some recommendations because I love horror. I’ve been thinking about getting The King in Yellow because a few games I play reference the yellow king and I love cosmic horror. Would this be a good starting place? or does anyone have recommendations for starter horror books? submitted by /u/Expensive_Bug7065 [link] [comments]

Book suggestions like Lights Out for a friend who's just getting into reading :)
So my friend has recently gotten into reading, they've never really been engrossed in reading like me, but they read Lights Out by Navessa Allen and enjoyed it and have seemed interested in reading some more, so I thought getting them a reading goodies hamper for their birthday would be a nice encouragement
King Arthur as part of a vampiric dynasty
I was listening to The Rest Is History episode on King Arthur and was intrigued by his undying/changed his life/once and FUTURE King status, and by Morgan Le Fey's necromancy knowledge. It seemed like obvious fodder for a vampire treatment, but a cursory search isn't turning up anything. Am I missing some good stuff? submitted by /u/constantlyknackered [link] [comments]
[Discussion 4/4] Bonus Book - 2010: Odyssey Two by Arthur C. Clarke | Chapter 43 - Vanishing Trick to end
Hello, fellow astronauts and cosmonauts! Welcome to our fourth and final discussion on 2010: Odyssey Two by Arthur C. Clarke. Last week, we witnessed the return of David Bowman in a manner of speaking, and Heywood Floyd was tasked with delivering a cryptic warning to the crew of the Leonov. Will they finally take him seriously and manage to leave Jupiter ahead of schedule? What is Bowman's role and purpose? Will I actually write accurate chapter summaries this time? Let's strap ourselves in for the final countdown and find out!
Fmc calling the mmc baby (pet name)
Hi, i recently finished {tears of betrayal by michelle heard} and i really liked how after an injury the fmc started calling the mmc “baby” she was like “its ok baby im here”, “baby you have done so much for me now let me take care of you” and she kept calling him that it was so sweet to me, usually its only the mmc who has a pet name for the fmc. Could you give me some books where either fmc calls him baby or they both call each other that? Thank you. submitted by /u/najpoziomka [link] [comments]
Looking for books like the show psych and mentalist
I love this genre of crime solving where the consultant is hyper observant and is pretending to be a psychic. Would help if the mc is more like shawn rather than jane, I love the adhd shawn vibe more than the charismatic jane vibe. Especially the friendship shawn and gus have, I love their siblings like friendship where they always banter. submitted by /u/Forsaken_Island_2496 [link] [comments]
I’m looking to reduce my screen time. Please recommend something engaging and fast paced
Genres I like: romance, South Asian chick lit or South Asian lit in general, but anything will do Hi! I am a former child reader who has now become addicted to screens and social media. I’m looking into suggestions for something short and fast paced that I can finish easily submitted by /u/HauntingOil3491 [link] [comments]
Fantasy books with a secretive, low profile mission-oriented MMC
Looking for a mysterious, quiet, powerful MMC that keeps really important secrets for the plot, doesn't really have a personality except to complete his mission, kinda living under a rock? Not showy, tries to keep a low profile. Not as the main narrator, but could switch POVs. Romance as a subplot could be nice, but looking for a heavy fantasy plot. Doesn't have to be exact, anything similar is more than great to me! submitted by /u/pechaoo [link] [comments]
Review - Preaching to the Choir by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Preaching to the Choir by Adrian Tchaikovsky Bingo Square: Published in 2026 Yet another Terrible World. How was it? I wouldn't say as good as Ogres, but better than Firewalkers. That may not be saying much. Elena Mendes is the girlfriend of Ross Enderbough, scion of that wealthy clan. He has brought her to a once every 40 years family gathering at the old estate, a former monastery.
Psychological horror recommendations
I am a fan of horror stories. Not a ghost stories fan tbh but I am more into psychological horror. One of my favourites are Poe's The Tell Tale Heart. Can you suggest some great reads you have encountered which have blown your minds away. Btw, if you are not encountered with Indian horror stories you can try The Hungry Stones by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. submitted by /u/SnooCauliflowers6117 [link] [comments]
Looking for a book like Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson but more mature
I’ve read a few books in life but it’s hard for me to get into them unless I’m really interested in it. This book I read when I was in like elementary or middle school. I loved it so much that I still remember it and how entertained I was reading it. It was a book that made me go through all the motions too, I feel. So I’m looking for a book that has a similar writing style. And preferably a similar fantasy style submitted by /u/Final-Satisfaction10 [link] [comments]
Recommendations after reading hardly digestible prose
So the last book I read was House of Leaves. Anyone who has read this knows this is a post-modern/experimental fiction work that is meant to be confusing, with text embedded in text embedded in other text, etc. I have now moved back to fantasy, and am over halfway through Gardens of the Moon by Erickson. This seems to be another difficult narrative to wrap my head around as it seems to assume a lot of background, and puts you right in the action with very little context or exposition.
[WWTBC] Looking for a romance where the heroine leaves after the hero takes his ex to the hospital
I'm looking for a grumpy sunshine romance novel set on a farm. The heroine is a sweet sunshine type girl while the hero is grumpy and owns a large farm. I think they have a one night stand and she get pregnant, although I'm not completely sure about that part. For some reason he convinces her to move in with him to his house .He has horses and I distinctly remember a scene where they help a horse give birth to a foal. He also has a younger brother.
Talking about a book by William Peter Blatty "The Exorcist"
Anybody who is interested in reading horror books must have heard about this classic . A book which I believe even with its simple premise demonstrates the conflict between a man and his being. And it's because of this that I loved it so much, often times we find ourselves searching for the meaning of our lives and even though that meaning may seem nothing more than a dull routine to the world, but to the one who finds his purpose it's those little things that bring him the greatest joys.
Horror Hunger Trend
I’m a bit of a newbie to horror lit despite being an avid reader for years, and I’m noticing a big… horror hunger/cannibalism trend? What Hunger, Nothing Tastes as Good, The Eyes are the Best Part, the Starving Saints… not complaining exactly, I love a lot of the titles I just listed, but it just seems like a kinda bizarrely specific trend that’s happening. Every time I go to the bookstore I see a new cover that seems to be evoking that same “sexy cannibalism” vibe.
Wally Lamb’s The River is Waiting
I so badly wanted to like this book, but I find Wally lambs writing so juvenile and boring. It’s a lot of “and then this, and then this, and then this” with no prose or flow or atmosphere. Also, Corby is such a knob it’s hard to even like him. This guy killed your child and landed in jail, and he pretty much has no deep reflections to offer the reader? He’s just going through the days at jail telling us about his surroundings and jail mates. I want to hear what you’ve learned here, how you feel.
