  • photo engraved on stainless steel

engraved a generic photo on stainless steel , dull stainless steel turned out well, this could probably be applied to most metals this is quite exciting as CO2 lasers and fiber don't do well in photos except for annodized aluminum

  • HF diamond stones

I bought their set quite a few years ago and they don't sell them anymore. I just need to know how the colors mate with grit size. I had labeled them with sharpie but no longer exists. Once I get this information, I'll scribe it into the backs. I've used these for starting after grinding and flattening my ceramic stones, though I now own a large 400/1000 diamond stone for that.

  • I bought too much gas and diesel fuel

The day it was announced that we had attacked Iran the night before, I decided to fill up everything we had with gas and diesel. I have six 5 gallon jugs that normally I fill up three times through the grass cutting season with non-ethanol. Wanting to get away from handling the 5 gallon

  • WTB 12″ Cole Jaws +/- Nova chuck

Well I got to researching cole jaws and to my surprise most of the turners on this forum seem to rarely use them even when they have 'em. So before I plunk down a lotta cash + tax on new ones, I figured I'd check if anyone wants to get rid of theirs. Ideally looking for a direct thread 1 1/4" Nova chuck with it. I am in NorCal and willing to send you a prepaid UPS label wherever you may happen to be within CONUS.

  • My new high tech dust collector

After a long period of R+D spanning approximately 45 seconds this morning, followed by an arduous 2 minutes of punching a hole with an awl and cutting and twisting some wire, I have a solution to my bandsaw dumping sawdust on the floor in the walkway when I am cutting and the dust port is not

  • Powermatic Drill Press Gear Rack

I absolutely do not like the aluminum gear rack. It’s garbage. Buckles. I want to replace with a copy made of steel. Surely someone here has addressed this. I understand pitch and pressure angle. I suspect the pressure angle is 20 deg. Regardless, has anyone ever found a source?

  • A Tale of Two Makas

At the beginning of the summer, I rented a Penske truck and drove to Indianapolis to pick up Dave Sochar’s Maka mortiser he had used in his now-closed doormaking business. It’s a 1970 DB-5. I was particularly interested in the unit because Mark Hennebury had previously rebuilt the head. As luck

  • Image Paint Software

Anyone else checked out the new advertiser, Image Paint Software? Their website has some absolutely gorgeous inlays. It says it works for the lasers as well as CNC. We don't do any colorful things like that for our inlay work, but that's really some beautiful work. If I did inlay work more often, I'd be taking that software for a test drive. Check it out..... http://www.amazoncanvas.com

  • Fascinating Bit of History

  • Shop Saber 23 question

Hello I found a used one for sale and what the seller to send me the serial number so I can figure out the year of it. Does anyone have a picture of one so I can send it to the seller to find his? Seems simple to me but the seller can't figure it out.

  • Base Cabinet for Tool Chest (Dutch)?

My (Dutch) tool chest is on the floor. This is not very good for getting things out of the bottom storage compartment. As that bottom compartment is full of metal planes... almost too heavy to lift for me to get it up on the sawbenches for a more comfortable reach. Also, then I find I need the

  • Color Matching - Every Case is Different

I built two headboards recently for the same customer. The first was made of rift sawn white oak and needed to match other cabinets I had built for them over 10 years ago. The finish involved a dye stain (SW’s BAC Wiping Stain, custom mixed plus some more modification with Transtint by me to

  • Not So Vintage Stanley Hand Plane Repair

I got into woodworking in the early 2000’s and bought a #4, it was a couple of years before I figured out I needed a Jack plane too. At any rate I purchased some new Stanley models, at the time still being made by Stanley in the UK (Sheffield). But they came with plastic handles which I really

  • Metabo 12″ Dual Bevel Sliding Miter Saw (HPT C12RSH3M)

Hey gang... I wanted to upgrade my 30 year old 10″ Milwaukee SCMS and did a deep dive into the reviews, finding that the Metabo was ver highly rated except for two shortcomings... the bevel release was inconveniently located at the back of the saw, and it used a laser instead of a shadow line

  • I Used to Enjoy Baseball

I used to enjoy baseball and still watch it some. All the changes have me thinking this is not the game I loved and grew up enjoying. I was more of a fan back in the day when pitchers in both leagues had to grab a bat and take some swings. Some pitchers were actually decent hitters. Now some

  • Still alive

I haven’t been posting on any forum for nearly two years. Somehow I just seem to have lost interest. I’m still alive though !

  • Why hand tools?

What led you to using hand tools for your wood working? For me, it’s a combination of noise and Norm Abram. I’ve found I hate the high pitched whine of power tools. Why Norm? I’ve always loved woodworking but watching This old house & then the Yankee Workshop, the vast array of equipment he had really intimated me. I watch Roy Underhill but it wasn’t until I really started trying that I realized using hand tools was a modern option. I currently use no electricity in any tool I use.

  • Hello from Germany, more garage organizer than woodworker

Hi everyone, I’m Heiko. I’ll say it once up front: I’m not a woodworker. My hobby is building small, simple web tools for everyday problems, and getting a garage organized is the kind of problem I enjoy most. Lately I’ve been reading a lot about how people lay out their shops, which is how I

  • Lie Nielsen Customer Service

I’m as guilty as anyone else for b*tching loudly when service is bad and saying nothing when its exceptional, so here is me turning over a new leaf... The magnet I had epoxied into my tool cabinet somehow came loose, and the #5 it was holding fell and got damaged. It broke the tote, knob, and

  • Lapping Spyderco Ultrafine

I have flattened and got rid of the swirl marks of the spyderco uf. I did some lapping with 36 grit and 100 grit silicon carbide. Obviously it is coarser and like the fine spyderco. Does anybody have experience with lapping stones to higher grits? What sic grits would be needed?

  • Another Headboard

The same customer I built a headboard for a few months ago asked if I’d build one for the guest bedroom. Of course. This one is cherry and of the same style as the last and is made with a veneered panel and solid wood frame wrapping it. I had a large “beam” of cherry that I was able to get

  • Nova Voyager drill press firmware

  • Looking for a bigger machine - how’s this G0698?

Howdy folks, I’ve been turning on a Delta Rockwell lathe with 10.5″-ish swing for the past three years. Got it for a clean 1 fiddy from a retired cabinetmaker, eventually ended up putting in a three phase motor with VFD and new bearings. I’ve had a lot of fun on it, but now my wife is after
