A Bike Fit Mistake Causing Hand Numbness (Real World Bike Fit)
Neill's Bike Fitting Online Program: https://roadcyclingacademy.com/bike-fit-fundamentals/ Numb hands while cycling? The cause might not be where you think. In this bike fit, Neill Stanbury works with Tim, a relatively new cyclist experiencing severe hand numbness while riding — to the point where he needs to take his hands off the bars and shake them out. While excessive pressure on the hands might seem like an obvious front-end bike fit problem, this case takes an interesting turn. Neill works through Tim’s position and biomechanics, looking at potential causes including wrist and nerve compression, neck position, saddle position, hood setup, cleat position and Q-factor. One of the biggest discoveries is Tim’s limited hip internal rotation and naturally externally rotated foot position. By widening his Q-factor and adjusting his cleat position, Neill is able to significantly improve Tim’s glute and posterior-chain engagement — potentially reducing the amount of weight being transferred onto his hands. They also uncover another remarkably simple contributor: Tim almost never changes his hand position while riding. Constant pressure in one position can contribute to numbness, even when the overall bike fit isn’t dramatically wrong. In this video we cover: Why cyclists experience numb hands How bike fit can affect hand pressure Q-factor and stance width Cleat position and foot rotation Hip mobility and knee tracking Glute and hamstring engagement Saddle height and weight distribution Hood and handlebar position Why changing hand positions matters When persistent numbness may require further medical investigation If you experience hand numbness, tingling or excessive pressure on the handlebars while cycling, this bike fit demonstrates why it’s worth looking at the entire rider-bike system rather than simply changing your handlebars or gloves.
