The Stonemaier Strategy Magazine
In the early ‘90s, I was fascinated by a magazine called Nintendo Power. It was mostly a strategy guide for Nintendo video games, complete with vibrant visuals showing levels and hidden areas in games like Mario Bros., Zelda, and TMNT. Despite not even owning a Nintendo gaming console, the magazine made me feel like I had access to dozens of hidden worlds.

Hunt for Blackbeard Game Review
There’s some version or another of Peter Pan that has Captain Hook deliver a quick monologue to Pan just before the good captain is vanquished. “You’ve defeated my men, taken my ship,” that sort of thing. While I cannot find this monologue in any edition of the script, I remember it very clearly from the summer camp production in which I played Captain Hook. I’d think I hallucinated it, but my prop hook was broken during the fight and I improvised a tidy, “broken my hook,” to cover the malfunction. You don’t forget that kind of triumph.
Friendly Fishing Game Review
Friendly Fishing, a feather-light set collection game, was one of my most anticipated GenCon releases. This tiny box, from publisher GameHead and designers Bruno Faidutti and Alex Randolph, caught my interest with artist A. Giroux’s charming cover. It held my attention thanks to the magic of shared incentives.

Scales of Fate Game Review
Scales of Fate is a strange beast, an uneasy marriage of strategy, bluffing, and deduction. It gets points for originality, ambition, and aesthetic, but I’m not sold on the whole. It’s like eating a cake in which you can taste the eggs separate from the flower and the sugar. Worse than that, none of the elements feel fully baked.
Panorama Game Review
I’ll be honest with you. Panorama had built up a bit of a negative reputation around the metaphorical halls of Meeple Mountain prior to its release. When Justin Bell and I played the prototype with publisher Scorpion Masqué at Spiel 2025, I thought it was fine, not something I’d play, and Justin...well, I would say Justin didn’t have much to say about it, but he did, and all of it negative. Phrases like “entirely arbitrary” were thrown around. I’m sure his opinion had nothing to do with the fact that he got walloped.
