Exo-Force: The final boss?
LEGO set Designer Chris Perron is well-known for his mech-building chops, but this Exo-Force-themed beauty is on a whole other level. The scale caught me off guard when I first saw this, because yes, those robots around the mech’s feet are roughly minifig scale, making this mech an absolute unit. There are so many great
Before the Headlight Brick: Exploring SNOT in LEGO Modulex [Feature]
SNOT building techniques may be everywhere in modern LEGO creations, but their roots go back further than you might think. LEGO builder Mark Egorov explores the forgotten world of Modulex, revealing how a rare brick from 1963 made surprisingly sophisticated sideways building possible decades ahead of its time.
To let: spacious one-bed apartment with stunning views and built-in hyperdrive
What happens when you take a cyberpunk high-rise tower block, attach an engine and a cockpit, and take it spacefaring? OK, we can’t be sure that’s what Pino was going for with this enormous LEGO spaceship, but that’s the vibe we’re getting! The shaping is excellent by spaceship standards; the big jump ring is the main eye-catcher, but the smooth segments really draw us in.
Size is in the eye of the beholder
We often talk about LEGO builds that belie their true size, but more often than not, these are microscale builds that look bigger than they actually are. I must admit I got the opposite impression from Andre Odyssey‘s Star Ship Albatross Frontier. At first, this looked like a unique design for a medium-sized, one-man fighter ship – the windscreen and Vic Viper-esque front are probably what led me down that road.
The shadows of the past are ever-present in this LEGO shadow sculpture
You can never outrun your past in this awesome shadow sculpture by William Fong, which depicts a modern diesel locomotive as a 2-dimensional brick painting, while a spotlight reveals a classic steam locomotive in the shadow, both rendered remarkably well, especially the shadow engine, which a peek behind the curtain reveals is actually quite small. This trick of photography is accomplished by a second, small engine built behind the first.
LEGO Botanicals 10371 Cozy Plants: the cutest plants that never need water [Review]
Around a year ago the Happy Plants were introduced to the LEGO Botanical collection. This set has evidently been very popular, considering that we are now already at the third installment in this series of cute little plants. LEGO Botanicals 10371 Cozy Plants could well represent the Danish word Hygge: a mood of cozy, comfortable
Building gingerbread houses can be tricky – but not when they’re made of LEGO
If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to visit the LEGO House in Billund, I think you’ll agree with me that it’s a pretty sweet place to visit. LEGO Designer Maxx Davidson has clearly overheard some similar comments while wandering around Billund, and has taken them to heart. We all know someone who goes a bit overboard with their gingerbread houses, but Maxx’s was deemed good enough to earn a place in the LEGO House’s Masterpiece Gallery in the run-up to Christmas!
Tales of the Space Age builder Jan Woznica turns his sights on the cosmos once more
Fan designer of the iconic Tales of the Space Age Ideas set (and our 2021 Creation of the Year) Jan Woznica is dreaming of distant stars again with a new project: a motorized radio telescope observatory. Using a motor hidden inside the blue research station, the two antennae move in unison to assist your minifigs in the search for extra terrestrial intelligence or listen to pulsars.
And for dessert, we’ll have the Penguin Chocolate Cake
There’s nothing wrong with a little treat. LEGO Masters Japan veteran Fumiaki Tateoka (Fuhmin) offers a cure for your sweet tooth with the Penguin Chocolate Cake, a build that’s as beautifully presented as it is assembled. Part 15470 has been frequently used by LEGO to represent cake, cupcakes, and various desserts – but rarely in a scale this large. We love when real-world objects intersect with LEGO photography and the fine dish presentation is simply delightful here.
Goku gathers the seven Dragon Balls in new LEGO Icons set [News]
As LEGO gathers more IP ito its ever-expanding portfolio, it has hoovered up the odd anime and manga set here and there. Joining One Piece and Pokemon is a heavy hitter of anime and manga, and one that’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser: Dragon Ball! 11390 Dragon Ball: Shenron & Goku depicts main character Goku
An alien island in an alien world
Back in February we covered Vangelis‘ awesome spaceship, which was up for a vote in the BrickLink Designer Program. Alas, sadly it didn’t make it through to production, but that hasn’t stopped Vangelis from giving the ship a proper setting with an amazing diorama. The most striking thing about the scene is, of course, the purple water, which immediately keys you in that this is an alien world, but the water is expertly crafted with a great natural, mottled effect as it shallows around the island.
