Puritan Board Progression
Hey friends, I’ve been on PB for about a year now and I have been thankful for all of your thoughts, suggestions etc. One thing I noticed off the bat is that people have different titles I.e. Freshman, Doctor, Graduate. Maybe I just missed this but I’m trying to figure out how the system works. Is it based on how many posts and replies you have, how long you’ve been on here, or something else? Just curious thanks.
Tyndale’s Works - what to read?
Brothers, For Reformation Sunday (Oct 25), I am preaching on William Tyndale's life and how he gave his life for the Word of God, anchoring my sermon in Psalm 119:161-168. I've read most of Tyndale's biography by Daniel Dennett, but little of his actual works. Those here who are familiar with his writings, where should I begin if I want to better understand Tyndale the theologian? I have the Banner set of his works. Thanks & blessings, Adam
Languages or dialects in Acts 2
This is an off-the-wall question, but I was reading Acts 2 tonight (this year’s Bible read-through is the NASB 95), I noticed a footnote that the word for “languages” in vv. 6 and 8 could also mean “dialects”. I’d be pressed to see any serious weight in this view, but I’m nonetheless curious
Engaging with Eastern Orthodoxy
Hello everyone, So up until 5 minutes ago, no one knew about Eastern Orthodoxy. I remember a couple years ago hearing about it for the first time and simply dismissing it as an internet fad. Now there is a large EO church being built in my town and a couple of the young men at my church are
The Reformed Divines & Schism
Happy Lord's Day! I've been thinking for a while, especially the last few days, about whether anyone has enough knowledge of 16-17th century theologians, especially the Scottish divines, on the topic of schism. Richard Ackerman (aka, Redeemed Zoomer) uses excerpts from the reformers and other divines (especially the Scottish commissioners) to justify his theology of schism, and I'm skeptical of his claims regarding them as I've only heard his reading of them and feel that I may not be... Mark’s Usage of “At Hand” / ἤγγικεν at the Beginning and End of the Gospel
My caveat here is that these are just some crude notes I was working on Monday night so I am happy to accept any criticism below. Doing some study on Mark and was surprised that I could not find a single reputable resource online that looks at comparing the usage or structure of Mark 1:1-15 vs
Essence vs. substance in WSC / Baptist Catechism
In the question on the Trinity, the WSC states that the three persons of the Godhead are "the same in substance" - but the Baptist Catechism says "the same in essence". Is there any significance to this change? Why was it made?
Sojourner: a free, offline Bible study program built around the Reformed tradition (feedback welcome)
Brethren, For the past while, I've been building a Bible study program for my own use and my family's. It has grown to the point where I'd like other people to try it. It's called Sojourner. It's free, open source, and runs on Windows 10/11. What it is It's a private, offline study companion. There's no account or subscription, and it doesn't make a network connection unless you press "Check for updates." Your notes, highlights, prayer lists, and sermon notes live in
Posted Another Episode of the Ol' Podcast
As always, thanks for tuning in. I was hoping to add video to the show, but I have yet found a solution for that problem. Thus, this was a bit more rough and DIY. Lord willing, we'll keep trucking along until we can add more to each episode.

Reformed Music Online "Free" at Streaming Sites - McMahon
Greetings all. I've been investing time in creating Reformed and Puritan Music for two years now. At the start, it was trial and error. Tech has improved in this incredibly. Now, done right, the songs are indistinguishable from actual recordings. I've gone back and remastered all the originals. Everything is updated in the latest tech. I've been taking Puritan Books, summarizing chapters, and turning them into music in varied genres. With that said, over the last month I've been uploading... Read more
How important are the languages?
I am a big fan of studying the languages and in most if not all cases would recommend someone training for ministry to study them. I have only been practicing them for about 3 years now (more Hebrew than Greek) but I have found it really beneficial and given me insight that I had missed with only the English. Undoubtedly though there are some who think that the languages are not very important and question whether they need to be studied at all. I was wondering if you guys had any specific... Read more
Advice and resources for a new father
Hello all! My wife and I are expecting our first child toward the beginning of next year. I wanted to reach out and see if there have been any resources apart from the scriptures that have been particularly helpful. Of course if there are any specific passages that have been encouraging to you or advice from wise men and women these would be more than welcome as well!
2026 PB Pick'em Week 6 ** Kick-off is 6pm CDT, FRIDAY
Good morning, my fellow college football lovers! Week 6 is here, and even down here in Houston it is apparent that autumn is in the air - it only reached a high of 80 degrees yesterday. The State Fair of Texas is well underway, and the Red River Shootout is this weekend... but alas, the game spread reflects Oklahoma's troubles, so we won't be including it in the slate. We do nonetheless have a number of choice matchups in this week's lineup... including #2 Georgia at #6 Alabama... and this... Read more
Best Westminster Confession of Faith commentary?
Looking for a thorough, clear and basic commentary on the WCF. Besides RC Sproul’s , which other ones would you recommend?
The Psalms Project
Good morning, does anyone listen to The Psalms Project on Spotify? I recently found it and have liked it so far, but I am completely new to having the Psalms put into a musical score and don't know what is considered acceptable. I put this in the music forum because I don't use this for worship, just general listening. Below is a link to the artist page.
Become member in OPC or PCA Church?
As I continue to navigate and learn more about the NAPARC world, I have somewhat of a dilemma. I've been attending a PCA church and a OPC church simultaneously through the summer. I'm looking to become a member of either here in the Twin cities so that I may come under care and begin pursuing ordination. I like both , the PCA church is much larger and have already immersed me in some of the leadership training opportunities at the church. The OPC church is smaller but powerful preaching... Read more
An insightful quote from Pope Francis on Sadness
"We receive so much from the Lord for our enjoyment, that sadness can be a sign of ingratitude. We can get so caught up in ourselves that we are unable to recognize God's gifts."(Pope Francis, Gaudete et Excultate 126) I thought this would be a helpful quote for those of us more prone to sadness and melancholy
Personal theology shifting from my church's
Hello all! I don't know if this is the right section to voice this plea for advice, but as I've never posted here before, I figured I'd give it a shot. In a nutshell, my theology has gone through a reformed transformation in the past year or so. I would say that I lie on the razor's edge between a reformed baptist and a reformed presbyterian, with the topic of paedobaptism being my current mental/intellectual barrier. My family are all unreformed baptists (unrelated, but perhaps helpful for... Read more
Best New Testament Greek Textbook
What is the best New Testament Greek reader for someone that has already studied the grammar of Attic Greek? I am studying Attic Greek (using Shelmerdine) in college and would like to start reading the New Testament. I will finish the Shelmerdine textbook over the next month and start reading Xenophon in my Greek 102 class this semester, but I have noticed the vocabulary needed for the New Testament is different from what I've been learning (which is focused on preparing students to read... John Knox for Armchair Theologians
McDonald, Suzanne. John Knox for Armchair Theologians. Illustrations by Ron Hill. Louisville, KY: Westminster/John Knox Press, 2013. Whereas earlier volumes in this series give a simple overview of a figure’s life and theology, Suzanne McDonald adds another factor: summaries of said figure’s
Thomas Watson
I must confess I have never read Thomas Watson. But with all the excitement over RHB’s release of his complete works, I figure I ought to read something by him. What is something short by him, 20-50 pages (including excerpts from longer works), that I should read to get a taste of his style and where I should prioritize him compared to Knox, Owen, Flavel, Warfield, Edwards, and others who I’m considering diving into more deeply? Thanks.

Best Printed Greek Old Testament
Good morning, I’m currently taking Greek, and I’ve enjoyed learning the language so far. Thinking to the future, I’d like to add a Greek OT to my future book list, but I need some guidance on which one is most recommended. I’ve not seen much more than the Rahlfs-Hanhart Septuaginta online as
Looking for resources to deal with Dan Mcllellan
Hello saints, I have a friend in work who is interested in the Bible, but unfortunately is a watcher of Dan Mcllellan. When I was a Roman Catholic, theories of Dan Mcllellan, Bart Erhman and others were taking as fact, we had a priest-lecturer in seminary who believed Jesus was not portrayed
Christian Music
Hey Everyone, I’m always looking for new Christian songs. The problem is as both a musician and someone with a love of theology I feel like it is hard to find a song with both good lyrics and good music. Thought I’d throw this out on the board curious if you had any suggestions on some songs or bands to check out.
Who in the Seminary EDU space should I contact about ReformedWiki.org?
Back in August 2023, I began an effort to build a Wikipedia-like site (uses the same software MediaWiki) to build a community-edited wiki but for Reformed Christianity known as ReformedWiki.org There is a lot of possibilities for what can be done with this, and I have begun getting a lot more
πνευματικαῖς in Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16
EPers only, please. Why is the Greek word πνευματικαῖς (spiritual) added to the words "psalms, hymns, and songs", which appear often in the superscriptions of the psalter (all of them appearing together in the superscriptions to 2 psalms)? What is Paul adding to the argument by supplying this adjective? I have heard a non-EP explanation and I would now like to know what those who practice Exclusive Psalmody say. Thanks in advance!
Was Jesus Leaving or Entering Jericho When He Healed Bartimaeus?
The relevant passages in the synoptic Gospels are Mt. 20:29, Mk. 10:46, and Lk. 18:35. I stand unsatisfied with the following reconciliations: Calvin: Bartimaeus indeed cried out when Jesus drew near Jericho, but he wasn’t heard because of the crowd. To keep the account clear, Luke bypassed

Our Bonds for Him Easy to Us

I was talking to a guy at my job yesterday who is Greek Orthodox, and we were talking about what they believe. Anyway, he ended up telling me about this guy father Josiah, and I looked him up real quick, and I will say I was very impressed with some of his insights. Are any of you familiar with
Phone options for a teenager
Hi friends, I'm doing some research on my parents' behalf into a good phone to get for my sister. She is starting to drive and my parents would like her to have a phone with the ability to call, text, and use GPS. However, they would also like the phone to have very minimal / no internet access. If anyone has good phone options, experience in this search or good advice I would be glad to hear it. Thank you!
Particularly insightful Ai answer to an enduring theological question
At times I pose questions in Ai to test it’s accuracy and reliability, or see if I am missing any points of understanding regarding this or that theological topic. I found this answer particularly insightful and thought I would share it. Not interested in controversy or debate; however, constructive feedback from both sides is welcome.

Their Conversion is Their Redemption
Matthew Henry (Commentary, Isaiah 1): The reformation of a people will be the redemption of them and their converts, for sin is the worst captivity, the worst slavery, and the great and eternal redemption is that by which Israel is redeemed from all his iniquities (Ps. 130:8), and the blessed

Reading the Bible Academically Compared to Devotionally
I don’t know if this will help any of you, but I share this because it’s been a really interesting thing in my life. I very much have a systematic mind when approaching the Bible. Often that would cause me to read the Bible in an academic way, thinking more about rationalization and categories
The transcendent & timeless word God
I have been listening to Dr. Greg Bahnsen as he went through the book of Proverbs. In chapter 14 he touched upon emotions and how they affect even our physical conditions. He gave a scenario of how someone who was affected by something and it was pretty much like I was setting there and he knew
Five Doctrines that Have all but Vanished from the Modern Church

And canst thou suspect poison to be in that cup which he delivers thee?

Jesus and the Cleansing of a Leper According to the Law of Moses
A quick search showed four places in the New Testament where Jesus healed one or more lepers. Matthew 8:4; Mark 1:44; Luke 5:14; Luke 17:14 In each case Jesus told the leper to show himself to the priest and to follow the law of Moses for the cleansing of his leprosy. Let’s see what’s involved

Bible for a Toddler with No Images of Christ
My mother wants to buy a Bible for my 2.5 year old for Christmas and knows/is respectful of our stance on images of Christ. She's recently started to go to a PCA church with my sister's family and their kids, but she comes from Catholic upbringing and transitioned to loose evangelicalism. She thinks the OPC is worlds apart - bonus, therefore, if you can give me a recommendation from a PCA member
How Did Moses Get The Early Genesis Accounts?
How do you think Moses received the accounts of everything that happened in the early chapters of Genesis? If he authored the book, do we just have to say he received direct revelation from God? I’m sure there was oral tradition that was passed on, but secular critics of the Bible I’m sure

Neo-Calvinism

God Ordaining Sin
Good morning, I have said in other posts that I am new to Reformed theology and am trying to read as much as I can on the matter. This morning I had a lot of thoughts on God ordaining sin and wanted to put it into writing for my own clarity and possibly to use as a brief defense of my theology
William Fenner on Fearing God’s Goodness and Mercy, and not just his Wrath
“Thirdly, a carnal man’s affections are not wrought upon regularly. His affections maybe are wrought upon, by God’s justice and judgments, because God is a consuming fire against sin, because God is severe against the works of iniquity, because he hath made Heaven-gate to be straight. These are
The Importance of Reading Hard Books

Seminary and L.A.M.P.?

Extended Scripture Memory - Testimony & Encouragement
I have memorized the Letter to the Hebrews. All 303 verses (KJV). To be fair, my accuracy rate is probably 97-99% rather than %100. (I may confuse short words like “and/for” “that/which” “mine/my,” “Thine/Thy,” etc. The Lord has been my helper in this, and has answered my prayers
John MacArthur’s One Perfect Life
Has anyone read One Perfect Life: The Complete Story of the Lord Jesus. I was considering doing a study of the four gospels and this looked like a good resource. Are there better Reformed alternatives? Thanks.
William Ames’s Exhortation to Students of Theology
William Ames (1576–1633), the English Puritan theologian exiled to the Netherlands, delivered An Exhortation to the Students of Theology at the University of Franeker on August 22, 1623. Convinced that theology is “the doctrine or teaching of living to God,” he urged future pastors to know the

Westminster Seminary California - thoughts from alumni?
Hi, all! I’m a future seminarian and am currently considering schools. I am a Particular Baptist (think 1689) who loves the Reformed tradition and am looking mainly at WTS, WSCAL, and RTS. I am very attracted to the academic rigor boasted by WTS. I am also, however, really considering WSCAL
Isaiah 14 and Satan
In a recent thread, some of us discussed the idea that Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 have an additional layer of meaning beyond the literal historical references to Babylon and Tyre. My Bible reading for the day brought me to Luke 10, where I have a note written in the margins to refer to Is. 14:12

Which Puritan has been an influence to you lately?
Over the past year God has allowed me to discover the riches of the puritan writings. Although I've always heard of them since coming to Christ, I've never been influenced to read them as heavily as I have since discovering the reformed tradition. Listening to Joel Beeke, Mark Dever, John Piper and Iain Murray often reference the Puritans kept me ever-searching for other puritan guys. As of late Thomas Watson has been a favorite of mine. Which Puritan has been of much influence lately for you?
The Most Ideal Form of Church Government
From the studying I have done in the past, though I am a Presbyterian, I will admit that trying to understand Church government simply using the Bible is very muddy stuff. I was just looking into Congregationalism and I think there is a lot that’s appealing there and a lot of Biblical

Gospel Psalms: The 150 Psalms for Singing (2026)
This has been seven or more years coming. First look. Gospel Psalms: The 150 Psalms for Singing. A disciplined metrical translation informed by historic psalters, the Authorized Version of the English Bible, and the Hebrew text (Naphtali Press, 2026). This psalter replaces the LPC Psalter (2017) and can be sold to others (which the 2017 psalter could not). At some point I'll have a page at naphtali.com where these can be ordered. More on that later since the way sales
