Reading the Bible Academically Compared to Devotionally
I don’t know if this will help any of you, but I share this because it’s been a really interesting thing in my life. I very much have a systematic mind when approaching the Bible. Often that would cause me to read the Bible in an academic way, thinking more about rationalization and categories
The transcendent & timeless word God
I have been listening to Dr. Greg Bahnsen as he went through the book of Proverbs. In chapter 14 he touched upon emotions and how they affect even our physical conditions. He gave a scenario of how someone who was affected by something and it was pretty much like I was setting there and he knew
Five Doctrines that Have all but Vanished from the Modern Church
Greetings, pilgrims I watched two videos from the Christian Faith Archives that got me thinking about myself. First, I should say that I am not endorsing the CFA, per se. But what I did hear was interesting, and it made me want to examine my own heart. The narrator made it clear he wasn’t

Reformation’s Preservation by Sydrach Simpson (1600–1655) Sydrach Simpson (1600–1655) was a prominent English Puritan minister, Congregational divine, and member of the Westminster Assembly, known for his defense of biblical church reform, liberty of conscience, and Christ-centered
God’s Terrible Voice
Speaking in the context of the recent plauge and the great London fire Thomas Vincent says the following about God’s righteousness in bringing about the judgment: “He is a great stranger in England that doth not know how wickedness hath abounded in the later years; his eyes must be fast shut
And canst thou suspect poison to be in that cup which he delivers thee?
“It is of marvellous efficacy to keep the heart from sinking under affliction, to call to mind, that thine own father hath the ordering of them: Not a creature moves hand or tongue against thee, but by his permission. Suppose the cup be a bitter cup, yet it is the cup which thy father hath given
The Revival of Dialectic, 1000-120
I'm a big fan of this Substack. I would read their two-volume work, but it's not available as an eBook. The Revival of Dialectic, 1000-1200, or, How the Western Tradition Fell in Love with Logic – Part 1The Revival of Dialectic, 1000-1200 – Part 2The Revival of Dialectic, 1000-1200 – Part 3
Jesus and the Cleansing of a Leper According to the Law of Moses
A quick search showed four places in the New Testament where Jesus healed one or more lepers. Matthew 8:4; Mark 1:44; Luke 5:14; Luke 17:14 In each case Jesus told the leper to show himself to the priest and to follow the law of Moses for the cleansing of his leprosy. Let’s see what’s involved
Church
Does anyone else remember when we served out of faithfulness rather than for a paycheck?
Bible for a Toddler with No Images of Christ
My mother wants to buy a Bible for my 2.5 year old for Christmas and knows/is respectful of our stance on images of Christ. She's recently started to go to a PCA church with my sister's family and their kids, but she comes from Catholic upbringing and transitioned to loose evangelicalism. She thinks the OPC is worlds apart - bonus, therefore, if you can give me a recommendation from a PCA member
How Did Moses Get The Early Genesis Accounts?
How do you think Moses received the accounts of everything that happened in the early chapters of Genesis? If he authored the book, do we just have to say he received direct revelation from God? I’m sure there was oral tradition that was passed on, but secular critics of the Bible I’m sure
2026 PB Pick’em Week 5 ** Kick-off is 6pm CDT, FRIDAY
Week 5 is before us! We’ll really see things begin to coalesce within the next few weeks. Some, like Mississippi State and Florida are off to a GREAT start, others... not so much. Who will emerge as national champion? More to follow... There are some decent games scheduled for Thursday, but I
Post Greek II
Hey all, I have just finished Greek II at RTS Global, I was wondering what are some things that you could recommend me to do to gain better clarity on Grammar? I know reading the text is super important, but I was wondering if there are any resources/books that may be helpful. Thanks!
Neo-Calvinism
Here on the PB, is Neo-Calvinism generally regarded in terms of Abraham Kuyper, or is it an earlier reference to Lyman Beecher and those who arose in the post-Jonathan Edwards era and the New Divinity?
Trying to find a good Presbyterian/Reformed Church in Germany
A church member has a sister in Erkrath, Germany looking for a good church. Can anyone help? Thanks—
God Ordaining Sin
Good morning, I have said in other posts that I am new to Reformed theology and am trying to read as much as I can on the matter. This morning I had a lot of thoughts on God ordaining sin and wanted to put it into writing for my own clarity and possibly to use as a brief defense of my theology
William Fenner on Fearing God’s Goodness and Mercy, and not just his Wrath
“Thirdly, a carnal man’s affections are not wrought upon regularly. His affections maybe are wrought upon, by God’s justice and judgments, because God is a consuming fire against sin, because God is severe against the works of iniquity, because he hath made Heaven-gate to be straight. These are
The Importance of Reading Hard Books
I came across this video and thought it would be worth sharing. Deep reading is difficult for me, so this kind of thing is a helpful reminder to persevere with this discipline. A summary of the transcript (AI generated) is as follows - Why reading hard books matters Deep reading is important
Seminary and L.A.M.P.?
Today I attended my first presbytery meeting and I heard about this initiative called "LAMP". Apparently designed to be a way to satisfy ordination requirements and cheaper than seminary, Anybody in the PCA ever been through this program and graduated?
Extended Scripture Memory - Testimony & Encouragement
I have memorized the Letter to the Hebrews. All 303 verses (KJV). To be fair, my accuracy rate is probably 97-99% rather than %100. (I may confuse short words like “and/for” “that/which” “mine/my,” “Thine/Thy,” etc. The Lord has been my helper in this, and has answered my prayers
