Where You Should Live: Five Factors to Keep in Mind
I ran across this post on Instagram by Bobby in Space (who posts about design and the psychology of place) and wanted to pull it onto the actual internet. Here are some snippets of his “5 hills I will die on as someone who studies the psychology of place”. I don’t think these are universal (e.g. people who live in rural areas likely prioritize other needs) or even necessarily the most important considerations (climate, sunlight, crime, schools), but they resonated with me.
39 Years Later, One Star Trek Legend Is Ready To Explore A Brutal Backstory
Back in 1987, when Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted, one character represented a bold, new step for the franchise. As Tasha Yar, actress Denise Crosby set the tone for TNG, playing a female chief of security on the USS Enterprise. Inspired by the character of Vasquez from Aliens, Next Generation creator Gene Roddenberry, the early TNG writers, and Crosby herself, infused Tasha with strength, bravado, and a very brutal and tragic backstory.
How Bernie’s Campaigns Reorganized the Organized Left
Ten years ago, while socialist Bernie Sanders was making his historic run for the Democratic presidential nomination that drew millions of supporters and promised a “political revolution” to live long past his campaign, I was part of a small revolutionary organization that pooh-poohed him as a faux renegade.
Teaser trailer for season three of The Lord of The Rings
Teaser trailer for season three of The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power. Maybe this isn’t the best show in the world, but I have been enjoying it. I thought s02 was better than s01 so at least the trajectory is promising.

Britain’s Military-Industrial Complex Is Promoting War Fever
War fever has gripped the European political establishment. War in Ukraine and rumors of continent-wide conflict with Russia are now the staple justification for rearmament, ballooning arms budgets, and the reintroduction of conscription across Europe.

The surprisingly hopeful quest to fix concrete
No, Rome was not built in a day, but it was built at breathtaking speed, its temples, amphitheaters, and aqueducts rising with the help of a magical blend of volcanic ash and lime. Today, that miraculous mortar has a less than enchanting name: concrete.
Will November stop Trump’s agenda?
Welcome to The Midterms, Actually. Every week I’ll be writing about two things: one big idea or trend I see forming across the 2026 primaries, and one thing I’m hearing from a voice on the ground. Let’s get into it.
What Happened To Jason? ’Crystal Lake’s Shocking Sci-Fi Ending, Explained
Crystal Lake was supposed to make sense of Friday the 13th’s incredibly complicated lore. What began as the quintessential summer-camp slasher has morphed over the decades into a story about immortal zombies, cryogenics, and space travel. Peacock’s new streaming series was supposed to simply set up the twist of the very first movie — that Pamela Voorhees is the murderer — and establish how her deformed son Jason could have survived his initial drowning.
Patients: All my best tips on how to opt out of data sharing
Even when patients are told they can opt out, medical providers often don’t give patients instructions on how. For patients who are interested in opting out, here are my best tips on how to start.
MyChart and a major hospital said I could opt out of sharing my health data. But they didn’t make it easy
My journey included a notary, a hospital that won’t honor its own policies and employees that gave me wrong information.
The Best Neo-Noir You’re Not Watching Is Better Than Ever
Since the Coen Brothers split up to do their own solo projects, Hollywood has been trying its utmost to fill in the gap that they left. We’ve occasionally seen sparks of Coen-esque brilliance in a handful of indie features, but TV has proven to be where the spirit of the Coen Brothers’ style lives. Noah Hawley’s Fargo series is the obvious first choice, though the FX anthology show was a case of diminishing returns.

It’s time to de-privatize the US government. “The problem is not just that privatization is often inefficient because it adds a nontransparent layer of profiteering on top of government functions. The problem is that government loses basic capacity.”
