I Turned Two Live Edge Walnut Bowls… and Kept the Moss

I started with two slightly green walnut bowl blanks and turned a pair of live-edge bowls. Because the wood is still a little green, these bowls will continue to change shape as they dry — and that’s exactly what I wanted. Live edge work can be tricky to get right. Those wings stick out past the rest of the bowl, so most of the time you’re turning air and only hitting wood about 40% of the time. Sanding the wings is another challenge—they have to be done stationary if you want a good finish. I finished both bowls with spray lacquer. I kept all of the bark on both pieces and even managed to leave a few small patches of moss still growing on the bark. I’m pleased with how they came out. If you enjoy woodturning, live-edge work, or seeing how green walnut behaves on the lathe, this one’s for you.

    Its been a while

I have not posted a video in quite some time. I have been working on a few projects. I just haven't gotten to the end of any of them. I've made a video about what I have been working on. What follows are those projects: Kiln- rolling bed/door I've spent the spring building a solar wood drying kiln. I've gone a little overboard with it. Not so much in size but in functionality. I hope to have a video about this out soon, although I have a lot of footage and it's a long project. My rough edit was almost 2 hours. It's usually about 30 minutes. LOL Star sphere - I was working on a sphere with stars on it for the 4th of July but didn't get it done and then put it aside and I haven't gotten back to it. I would like to finish it. It's a dodecahedron sphere with a star pattern in each pentagon. I ran into trouble with the angle on the pentagons so I need to re-cut the sticks and hopefully make it work. Potter’s head - I know how much everyone loves AI so I want to do a video where I use it as a tool and not a solution. If you're a fan of MASH, the TV show from the '70s and '80s, there's an episode where Margaret and Frank have a bust of Colonel Potter carved and there's a pretty nice image of it in the show. I thought I could use that to create a model and then carve my own version of the Colonel Potter bust. Hey, that's nice! Sword handle A viewer sent me a sword! But it needs a handle so I plan to make a handle for it. I'd like to do a segmented wood turned handle on the CNC. Maybe a handle that has some aspects of a traditional pattern but is made in a different way, made with wood. Fir sphere - I've been gathering firewood all summer. One of the trees I came across had a piece that was a big branch that had been cut years ago and the tree had grown around the cut. I thought this would be interesting to wood turn the chunk itself as had the form of a sphere within it. So I turned two half spheres out of this piece and now it's drying. The plan is to let this dr

Kevin's Simple Table Saw Earphone Hanger Upgrade 3D Printed

I assumed I'd never own it again. Then I got a message from Guild member Socheat. He'd had the saw for years, but his woodworking had gone in a different direction and the PM2000 had been sitting in storage. He wanted to find it a new home. Turns out that home was mine. Getting this thing back during our 20th year of The Wood Whisperer hit me harder than I expected. But before I could put it back to work, it needed some attention. Smart Woodshop Fam Build: Kevin’s Motorized Mini 3D Print Farm!

Check out this build from Smart Woodshop FAM member Kevin Criswell! He managed to fit an entire double-decker mini 3D print farm into a narrow 50-square-foot hallway space. Using an electric motorized lift table on heavy-duty casters, the workstation raises up to give him comfortable standing access to the lower Bambu printers and AMS units, and lowers down flush to the floor for solid printing stability and easy access to the top machines. Paired with compact side shelving and Gridfinity organization, Kevin shows how to maximize serious production out of a tiny footprint. Get your Smart Plans here: https://stores.modularmarket.com/paulk_homes/index.php Huge shoutout to Smart Woodshop FAM member Kevin for showing off his compact setup! Motorized Lift Table for 3D Printers Double Decker Shop Setup

With five 3D printers now running in the shop, floor space was getting tight. In this video, I take a 4-leg motorized standing desk frame and build a custom double-decker mobile printing station. To fit printers on both levels and still be able to open the AMS units and access the build plates, I crafted custom solid beech leg extensions to give the frame the extra vertical travel it needed. Mounted on Bennington R8 smart casters, this setup rolls effortlessly down the shop hallway and lifts up at the push of a button so I can service the lower printers comfortably. Get your Smart Plans here: https://stores.modularmarket.com/paulk_homes/index.php Stacking the printers on a motorized lift frame saved a huge amount of floor space, and those beech leg extensions gave me the exact clearance needed to open up the AMS units. How do you manage footprint and tool storage in your shop? Let me know down in the comments!

  • How To Aerate your Lawn with a CORE AERATION

I’m happy to partner with Jonathan Green | Lawn care again this fall and September through early October is a great time to aerate and seed your lawn. An aerator will usually cost around $100 to rent for the day. What I like to do is run the aerator in one direction, spread Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed, and then run the aerator again in the opposite direction. This gives you good seed-to-soil contact and helps the seed germinate and grow. Once I’m finished with the aerator, I can return it. Some rental places offer half-day rentals, so if you have the time, that’s one way to save a little money. If I have enough daylight, I’ll spread my fertilizer and soil amendment the same day. If not, I’ll do it the following morning. I have a lot of clay in my soil, so Jonathan Green Love Your Soil is a product I like to use to help loosen compacted soil and promote root growth. A little work this time of year can make a big difference in your lawn next spring.

You have reached the end of this list.
