The Bortle Scale is a numeric scale that measures how dark the night sky is, from 1 (no light pollution) to 9 (inner-city skies). The lower the number, the better the sky will be for night-sky photography and seeing stars. If you’re trying to find the best skies near you for photography, look at a light pollution map and travel to the area with the lowest number on the Bortle Scale. This will yield the image with the most detail and brightest stars and galaxies, resulting in the most impressive image of the night sky. Canadian photographer Kevin Boyle was named a 2026 Hasselblad Master in the Architecture category for his series Movieland. His photographs explore historic theaters after dark, using long exposures and carefully controlled light to transform familiar architecture into something cinematic and almost otherworldly. In this conversation, Kevin and I talk about Movieland, the earlier Daysleeper series, and how one body of work can lead to another as ideas and techniques develop over time.
