How I Turned This Ordinary Garden Into a Dark Portrait with Gavin Hoey
What you see is a portrait session sunny garden. What a photographer sees is a model in dark gothic clothes and the potential to match that with their light. In this video photographer Gavin Hoey takes a perfectly ordinary outdoor location and uses a single flash to completely change the mood of the scene, turning bright daylight into a much darker, more dramatic portrait. Right from the start Gavin has a fixed idea of what he hopes his one flash location lighting should look like, but he starts by taking the ambient only portrait to give himself a benchmark. From there he underexposes the daylight to the point where day turns to night, at least through his viewfinder! Turning day to night with flash on a sunny day requires a lot of power so Gavin uses a single Flashpoint XPOLR600 Pro II strobe which he combines with a narrow beam reflector to give both maximum power output and a controlled pool of light. Gavin’s location lighting workflow isn’t always about waiting for the perfect weather or finding perfect light, sometimes it's all about looking at the scene and matching the styling with the lighting to create the picture you want.
