  • Starting a BJ40 build, what would you do first? Looking for suggestions from people who've done it

I'm starting a project on a Toyota BJ40, and I'm looking for advice before I spend money on the wrong things. The vehicle: Year: 1989 Engine: 3B diesel Condition: enging is fine denting and painting work needs Current mods: stock What I want it for: Weekend trails / overlanding and long trips / rock crawling / mostly a restored daily driver that can handle off-road My rough budget: slow n steady i will not do it fast beacause i want to things very clearfully What I'm thinking about so far:

  • Van Life [Reddit] Read

Camping with a dog—how do you organize the stuff that never fits?

Apparently my little boy thinks the space next to the battery is his. 😂 I’m figuring out storage for camping with him. Once the battery is in, the bowls, food, leash, and towels all need somewhere to go. I want his stuff easy to grab without having to unload half the camper. I’m torn between one removable bin and a few smaller door-mounted organizers. The bin seems easier to pack, but the organizers might make better use of the space. What’s worked for you—and what became annoying after a few trips?

  • Losing my mind with bad smells

I’m losing my goddamn mind. Been living in my van for several months now and there has been this horrible sometimes subtle and sometimes more obvious musty sweet nutty smell in a specific area of the van, but I cannot for the life of me track it down. Every time I try to localize where it’s coming from, the smell just goes away and all I can smell is what I’m actively smelling (cushions, trash bin, bathroom, etc.). I’m losing my mind, it makes me feel so horrible. I feel so hopeless about finding and eliminating it because I CANT FIND IT.

  • Beginner reccs

Hey all! I really would love to set a goal to save up for my own little camper-van. I’m a bit of a newbie and have never owned one before. I would like something simple, budget friendly but with enough room for me and my young daughter for weekend and holiday camping adventures. Don’t need anything fancy but a toilet would be great. Any recommendations?? TIA submitted by /u/Educational_Fan_8637 [link] [comments]

  • IPhone Satellite Messaging - does it support sending to toll-free numbers?

I'm setting up a toll-free text line that people could use to text for weather updates or alerts while out of service. Before I rely on it, I need to know if it actually works from Messages via satellite when out of cell range. Some services block short codes and toll-free numbers, and I can't find a clear answer for Apple's satellite texting. submitted by /u/stravinsky_ [link] [comments]

  • Recommendations for "headquarters tent"

I'm in a 4WD club and we do a lot of winter trips to the desert, Death Valley, Panamint, etc. Looking for a large weather-resistant tent we could use that could be carried in the back of a pickup truck or strapped to the roof of a Jeep and could accommodate 4-8 people sitting around in bad weather. A place to sit and have dinner out of the rain, use as a warming hut (with a couple of diesel heaters running) or just a place to hang out and play cards and have some whiskey while the wind and rain are howling outside.

  • Halfway through a 20 day road trip

We left Atlanta on October 1st for a 20 day overland trip pulling a small trailer with the hope of catching the foliage change in New England. Today was the halfway point and we spent last night and the next couple just outside Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine. This has been an amazing trip so far. Looking forward to the other half. I will have several more photo dumps as the GF and I are both taking photos. Hope you enjoy our photos. submitted by /u/Sheldons_spot [link] [comments]

  • WiFi situation in EU + Turkey

From the US + planning for Europe Originally wanted to get starlink mini but it’s not supported in Turkey, which I’ll be spending a few weeks in. If I wanna get a portable router that I can insert a SIM card into, it’s like $200 and even then idek if it’ll be enough. What the max download/upload speed you can get with a sim in a portable router? I need a good stable connection for remote desktop setup. If I can’t get a good connection with a portable router, my next option is working out of game cafes or something like that.

  • Lifting the driver floor tray spills loose trail gravel over the sill

Tilting the stiff driver side floor tray to clear the pedals dumps half the loose creek gravel straight over the plastic door sill. The tall perimeter lip holds standing mud fine while driving, but trying to squeeze that rigid molded edge past the steering column creates a funnel that empties right into the door frame gap. A buddy running trails in the same area pointed out 3W as a possible replacement with slightly more flexible sidewalls.

  • 89 Cherokee XJ or 2nd-gen 4Runner (5.3 V8 swap)?

I’m looking at two 4x4s: 1989 Jeep Cherokee XJ: ~$4,500 USD 2nd-gen Toyota 4Runner with a 5.3L V8 swap: ~$7,500 USD Both would be weekend vehicles for some off-roading, not daily drivers. I’m also pretty new to cars and want to start learning how to work on them myself. is that a terrible idea for someone with little mechanical experience? Edit: i know the xj has some poorly modded things (Mismatched tires, missing flare and black paint overspray) but the car is well mantained, only one owner. and the interior is pristine.

  • How do you deal with no cellular coverage in emergencies

Hey guys, I'm curious how you ensure you can get in contact with emergency services when necessary - I know there are Garmin Intouch devices and satellite phones, but the subscriptions can be quite expensive. Do you do any trip planning in terms of having regular connectivity or knowing where you can find connectivity nearby? Would an app that helps you find nearby signal or the last spot on your drive where you had signal, be useful to you? submitted by /u/za_snake_guy [link] [comments]

  • What’s the appeal of bus conversions?

It seems like it would so much easier to convert a box truck than a schoolie or transit bus, since those have so many irregular curves and no wood frame to screw things into. Most of their wall surface is windows, so isn’t it hard to make a livable space? I’m wondering why schoolie type conversions are so much more common than box trucks considering how much easier it would be to convert a box. submitted by /u/trisolariandroplet [link] [comments]

  • Fears about gear outside van

I feel like I always see people with surfboards or paddle boards hanging off the side of their rig, or bicycles that live on the back. For those of you who do this, have you had any close calls with people trying to steal your stuff? Do you take it inside the van when you sleep or when you are just otherwise not around your van for the day? submitted by /u/NekkidGrammaaw [link] [comments]
