JK-BMS estimated SOC better than Smart Shunt? Fixing peaking cells with Carbon Paste
So, this morning, we had now power. It was my fault, I guess... Or maybe Victron's fault as the Smart Shunt was a bit too optimistic with the SOC estimation. I have set the Shunt as my battery monitor in my system, but this was a big mistake. As it estimated too high, the vehicle charger did not turn off at the set 10% remaining capacity and fully depleted the battery shelf until... everything turned off! As all three batteries of the shelf were completely empty, I also took the opportunity to start repairing the troublemaker battery #2. I used some carbon conductive assembly paste some of you recommended and 'fixed' cell 12 and 8. Cell #12 was always peaking with high cell voltage and the JK balancer kept discharging it for months. Therefore, this cell had a far lower SOC than all other cells in this pack. I connected the ZKE-Tech tester to find out how many Ah were actually missing. The result surprised me! I treated only these two cells with the carbon paste and will test them for a few weeks now. At the moment, all looks good, so this may be the fix for battery 2? Tesla published a patent application that solves several challenges for the dry electrode, tabless 4680 battery cell through the use of coatings, tapering the electrode, and electrode sleeves. That should help reduce cell defects during both the manufacturing and use phases of the battery cell, as well as present opportunities for increased energy density through thicker electrodes and higher silicon loadings.
